In earlier releases of SuSe (6.4,7.0) I had luck with the following
procedure:
1) Install the php4 rpm as it came from the SuSE CD's (or other medium)
2) Build my own PHP (without make install)
3) replace libphp4.so
4) restart Apache
Hope that helps.
