configure hangs

./configure --with-apache=/home/grm/apache/apache_1.3.14
I'm trying both php-4.0.3pl1 and php-4.0.2 and they are hung at
checking for pthreads_cflags...
It seems to be in the second iteration of
for flag in -kthread -pthread -pthreads -mthreads -Kthread -threads -mt
-qthreaded; do
that it is hanging. I'm using Red Hat Linux 6.2.
