php content not parsed

OK, I installed as per INSTALL, everyhting ok, no errors.
I created the test file test.php: <? phpinfo() ?>.
When I call up this page from a browser I simply get the markup regurgated:
i.e.: <? phpinfo() ?>.
This is the same for any php markup.
Any help would be appreciated.
