stop access to local folders?

How can I stop people from seeing in the browser the content of my web folders? For example if I have a folder called "newsgroup", right now if they type http://www.mydomain.com/newsgroup/, they can see the index of that folder... I do not want this... PLease help. thanks, gabi.
