Installation woes

I've installed apache and added the AddType lines to accept .php
AddType application/x-httpd-php4 .php
When I try the LoadModule
LoadModule php4_module libexec/libphp4.so
I get an error.
Cannot open shared object file libphp4.so
I've followed the instructions at
http://www.php.net/manual/en/install.apache.php
to the letter, but there is
no libphp4.so anywhere on my system.
I'm using Apache 2.0.39 and php 4.2.1 on RedHat 7.3
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
