GD Compiles, but PHP doesn't

I am trying to update GD, on Solaris 2.6 with PHP 4.1.2. I installed GD 1.8.4, and it compiled with no errors. My only theory is that some old files are left over from the previous install of GD 1.3. Any help most appreciated.
