Similarly, I'm using php 4.2.2 with SuSE 8.0 professional and Apache 1.3.26
with no problems. My configure line is:
./configure --with-apxs=/usr/local/httpd/bin/apxs
--with-mysql=/usr/local/mysql --with-gmp=/usr/local/lib/gmp --with-curl
--enable-trans-sid --enable-ftp
