My thanks for the advice below - leaving out the trailing '/' has improved the situation, however the main problem - missing 'mysqlclient' - is still there when I run the 'make' command to install PHP4.
The file (along with the 'libmysqlclient' files) is just not on the system - the CDROM that came with the book 'PHP Fast & Easy Development' did not install the file when the initial mysql installation was run.
Perhaps the only solution is to download it from somewhere - unless someone has any other suggestion....!

Steve, I will try out your advice - the original debug.log file is attached, which contains the parameters in the config command. Well, here's one thing I notice from your log: CONFIGURE: './configure' '--with-mysql=/usr/bin/mysql-3.22.32-pc-linux-gnu-i686/' '--with-apxs=/usr/bin/apache_1.3.12/bin/apxs'CC: gcc CFLAGS: -g -O2CPPFLAGS: CXX: CXXFLAGS:INCLUDES: -I/usr/bin/apache_1.3.12/include -I$(top_builddir)/Zend-I$(top_srcdir) -I/usr/bin/mysql-3.22.32-pc-linux-gnu-i686//includeLDFLAGS: -Wl,-rpath,/usr/bin/mysql-3.22.32-pc-linux-gnu-i686//lib/mysql-L/usr/bin/mysql-3.22.32-pc-linux-gnu-i686//lib/mysql If you look in the INCLUDES and LDFLAGS sections you see there are some double slashes "//". This may be what's confusing the linker. They seem to come from the trailing slash on your --with-mysql option in the configure parameters. Try re-running configure without the trailing slash after '--with-mysql=/usr/bin/mysql-3.22.32-pc-linux-gnu-i686/'. So like this: ./configure --with-mysql=/usr/bin/mysql-3.22.32-pc-linux-gnu-i686 --with-apxs=/usr/bin/apache_1.3.12/bin/apxs Am I right in surmising that php-install@lists.php.net e-mail address the entry for a PHP discussion group? The list (to which I'm also new) is specifically for discussion of installing PHP (which is the topic of your post, so you came to exactly the right place). There are a number of other lists covering what happens after you get it installed :-> ---------- Steve Lane Senior Project Manager Chris Moyer Consulting Inc., Chicago 833 W.
