Installing PHP as a module of Apache 1.3.26 - undefined _zval_ptr_dtor_wrapper

Installing PHP 4.2.3 under apache 1.3.26 gibes me the following error when trying to start apache:-
# /usr/local/apache/bin/apachectl start
Syntax error on line 205 of /usr/local/apache/conf/httpd.conf:
Cannot load /usr/local/apache/libexec/libphp4.so into server: /usr/local/apache/libexec/libphp4.so: undefined symbol: _zval_ptr_dtor_wrapper
/usr/local/apache/bin/apachectl start: httpd could not be started

And line 205 of /usr/local/apache/conf/httpd.conf reads:-
