I am a WinXP user (NTFS file system) running IIS and using
DreamWeaverMx. I am running into problems when trying to install
PHP/MySQL (haven't yet begun installation of MySQL). The PHP version is
4.2.2 Win32 downloaded from php.net. I am installing PHP as a CGI
process with IIS.
I am following instructions given in "DreamWeaverMx PHP Web Development"
published by Glasshaus.
I have followed all installation instructions (and re-checked) but am
having troubles viewing the "test.php" file in my browser. This is the
code created for that file and written in Notepad:
<?php phpinfo(): ?>
When I view the file in my browser, all I see is the code and not the
PHP 4 Credits/Configuration screen I am supposed to see.
Here are some details of my installation experience (possible
problems?):
*Installed IIS - seemingly without a hitch
*This created the "Inetpub" folder on my C: drive. I assume the
"wwwroot" folder inside that is the root folder for my new web server
right?
*Created "c:\php" folder and unzipped the php installation files to it.
Copied and renamed files (where applicable) to Windows and System
directories
*In the Internet Services Manager I configured the Home Directory tab to
point to the php.exe
*POSSIBLE PROBLEM: Instructions direct me (as an NTFS file system user)
to open the Properties window of my c:\php folder and look for the
Security tab. I Have No Such Tab! Instead, I clicked the Web Sharing
tab, clicked Share This Folder, then clicked Ad. That window has the
following features displayed/checked: Directory: c:\php, Alias: php,
Access Permissions: Read, Application Permissions: Execute (includes
scripts).
*Shut down and restarted the IIS service via the command prompt (wow -
haven't used DOS since Win 3.1)
*Re-booted system just because.
*Created the "test.php" file above in Notepad and saved it to the
c:\Inetpub\wwwroot folder
*In my browser, I navigated to file:///C:/Inetpub/wwwroot/test.php.
This is where I saw the raw code
*When creating a new dynamic site in Dreamweaver - telling it my test
server was on my computer - the Test URL button yielded a "Successful
Results" message.
*In my browser, I also navigated to http://localhost/testsite/test.php
(got this from Dreamweaver under the Edit Site Properties wizard [site
name is Test Site]). Doing this gave me the following message:
Security Alert! The PHP CGI cannot be accessed directly.
This PHP CGI binary was compiled with force-cgi-redirect enabled. This
means that a page will only be served up if the REDIRECT_STATUS CGI
variable is set, e.g. via an Apache Action directive.
For more information as to why this behavior exists, see the manual page
for CGI security.
For more information about changing this behavior or re-enabling this
web server, consult the installation file that came with this
distribution, or visit the manual page.
*And now I'm stuck. Any help would be much appreciated.
I also have a related security question. A friend told me that since
the Inetpub folder is a default installation location, there are
security issues and I should rename or move this directory. Can anybody
elaborate/offer suggestions? I am using this locally only for use in
learning PHP/MySQL and once up to speed will publish sites to a remote
server. Do I need to be concerned with this at all security wise?
