some further information I configured php4.2.3 as follows:
--with-mysql
--with-apxs
--with-gd=/usr/local/gd
--with-freetype-dir=/usr/local
--enable-gd-native-ttf
--enable-gd-imgstrttf
--with-jpeg-dir=/usr/include
--with-png-dir=/usr/include
--with-zlib
it gets through these fine when it goes into /usr/local/php/ext/gd is
when I get the following message
