MySQL support is bundled with PHP 4.x, you don't have to enable it. You can disable it
(--with-mysql=no) or point it to your mysql client libraries (--with-mysql=/path/to/mysql)
What is your configure line, OS, and PHP version?

I suspect it is because you did not compile php --with-mysql. Does a
phpinfo() show mysql compiled in?
