Cannot Find -lmysqlclient

I am using the CD with the book "PHP fast&easy web development".
I installed and Configured MySQL.
I installed Apache.
Installing PHP I got the following:
make: /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lmysqlclient
make[1]:***[libph4.la] Error 1
make: [all-recursive] Error 1
The debug.log has the first of the above three make lines.
My computer is HP Pavilion PIII 533 Hz, 128 MB RAM.
