Frankly, I consider this RFC a bug fix of the current "broken" implementation, which was broken with 7.0 and the move to 64bit integers. As such, I would just make the behaviour of returning integers the default behaviour in 8.4. If, for some weird reason, people want less accurate numbers, they can always cast the input to float.
