A lot of this pain is mitigated by modern packaging systems;
arguably its their job to make this process easier, and PHP shouldn't
try to second-guess it but make its configuration process as
flexible as possible to fit into rpm/ports/deb/openpkg/whatever.
On OpenBSD anyway, the relevant dependencies get pulled in by
the packages on a per-module basis automatically.
