For the first part of the question, the application does not make any calls to exec() or shell_exec(). For the second part, here's what my co-worker sent me: /usr/include$ grep F_SETFD find . -type f

./asm/fcntl.h:#define F_SETFD           2       /* set/clear close_on_exec */
./bits/fcntl.h:#define F_SETFD          2       /* Set file descriptor flags.  */
