Doesn't look quite right - the source of the problem was that the unsetenv routine wasn't working right under Windows. This patch made the unsetenv routine not run properly, because the .key element effectively stopped being the key, but also contained the value. A side effect of that was that it made this particular example work :)
The unsetenv routine should now be fixed for Windows.
