application variables

Hi experts!
Is there any way to get application-level variables?
This is mostly done using a DBMS, but that implies a lot requirements (a DB
engine, a table, etc)
How do you share simple pair keys/values over an application?
* session_id + session_name ?
* serialize over a raw file
