With PDO it's

I don't see that much of a difference... And PDO is built-in.

Maybe you should have a look at PDO:
http://php.net/manual/de/book.pdo.php
Or other database abstraction layers out there, there are plenty. Search
at packagist.org for example.
Just to name a few that I heard of, but don't use myself: Doctrine,
Propel, RedBeanPHP
