php with ldap

Hi,
We used to use MessagingDirect's directory server. Then switched to
openldap.
One of our customers reported:

Did something change with regard to PHP in the LDAP configuration with
the move to openldap?
LDAP in php3 works fine, but the same script in php4 fails to even
connect -- ldap_connect("operator.tamu.edu") fails. php3 and php4 seem
to be calling different versions along different paths, so I wasn't
sure if it was a compatibility issue or a configuration issue.

Has anybody ever experienced the similar problem? I'm not aware that
openldap's configuration has anything to do with specific languge
support (e.g. php). Any ideas?
