highlight_string inside ob_callback

I try use the highlight_string($str, true) function inside a ob_callback
handler and it does not work.
function callback($str) {
return highlight_string($str, true);
}
ob_start('callback');
echo "<? some php code ?>";
This generates nothing. Can anybody help me? Thanks
