INQUIRY

hello,i was loaded Red Hat Linux on my computer and I was trying to query a MySQL database using PHP embedded in HTML.Instead of executing the PHP script, the script was printed out as I had typed it into the editor or nothing happened at all. for example the script: <? echo "Hello world" ?> embedded in HTML does not print out anything. I thought it was something to do with my tags so I changed them to <?php... but it didn't work either. I was wondering if you had any suggestions on how I could do this.
