Actually I'm using Windows 2000 with Internet Explorer 6 and I have a
program (winzip) associated with .tar and .gz files.
Now that I look at it further, the problem only occurs with IE and not
Netscape.

This is not the case. If you use Windows 98, and no program is
associated with .tar, the OS appends the extension twice to the filename
for some reason... This is a known problem of Win98. If you would like
to avoid it, you should associate a program with .tar files (az unzip
program).

Hi,
Just to let you know, when you download php-4.2.2.tar.gz from
au2.php.net, it sends the file with an extension of .tar.tar instead of
.tar.gz
