Just out of curiosity: What's wrong with specifying colors this way?
To be perfectly honest, I don't know. I'm going to guess, however, that some browsers won't like it and will just pad the string with zeros (so #abc would become #abc000 instead of #aabbcc). Plus, I don't the 3-bytes we might save on bandwidth is worth the "ambiguity". :) - Colin
