This is not true, as the search returns about 203 hits:
"203 documents match your search for 'install' on the PHP website:"
The small number is alright, because I've set up htdig to only create
indexes of the german and english manual, and I did remove cal.php from
the index.
This does speed up indexing, search and most significantly the quality
of the results (mainly because the first results were mostly right
manual pages, but in languages other than the two most important for our
mirror). If this is something you don't want for an official server, I
will re-enable full indexing.
One thing that is not nice in our search page, is that htdig does find
matching documents but is not able to show the part of the text where
the actual match is found. I'm working on it - but I don't mind if
someone has a hint... :)

No - we would like to continue to offer local search support. :)

I adjusted our virtualhosts settings accoring to your advice.
