Problem

Hi, I'm new to PHP and I really want to learn it, I also am pretty familiar with the basic HTML commands. I have made a simple counter with PHP as my first script, but what i really want to do (is record a AIM (AOL Instant Messanger) Screen Name on the counter. There is a website called Subprofile.com which can do that for you, but I'm interested in doing it my self, the URL for one of thier website (after you register, and creat your own webpage) has http://...v.php?nick=screename. What does the '?' do and the things after it? Does it have to do with what i want to do? Can i do this with PHP or do i need to integrate it with Jave or osmthign else?
