I've put together some primitive load balancing for the manual-lookup
feature of www.php.net.
It works like this:
If there is a mirror in your country that has the search feature
enabled, the search is redirected to that mirror.
Otherwise, if the load is not too high, serve the search on the
www.php.net box itself.
If the load is too high, we serve a 503 response with a suggestion to
try again later, or use a mirror.
We are currently tuning this "too busy" threshold, as well as examining
areas of the phpweb (and looking at log files) to determine where we can
make additional optimizations.
If you are running an official mirror and are not currently running the
local search feature, it would be nice if you could enable it so that
we can improve the load balancing, particularly if the physical location
of your mirror is in a large country, or if no other mirrors in your
country support it.
