#Kenya News And Analysis:

1. Narc government facing zero political opposition
---------------------------------------------------------------
Since the National Rainbow Coalition (Narc) came to power six months ago, organized opposition
politics in Kenya has fizzled out. The former ruling Kenyan African National Union (KANU) party
which was defeated after 39 years in power, is the “official opposition”. In reality, KANU is in
no position to oppose the new Narc government because majority of top KANU politicians including its
aging Chairman, former President Daniel arap Moi, are in a permanent State of panic because of
possible prosecution for corruption, human rights violations, embezzlement of public funds,
political assassinations and other crimes that the party committed during its brutal reign.

I, Peter Maina Mbugua residing in Mombasa, Kenya has worked for 19 years with Kenya Power &
Lighting Company (KPLC), the only distributing and transmitting company of electricity in Kenya. I
was employed as a junior staff after which I joined the Trade Union. For 13 years I was rank and
file Member of the Union where I was also active in various industrial struggles. In 1996 I was
elected Branch Committee member of the Union and two years later, I was elected Branch Chairman. I
became vocal in campaigning for the rights of workers in Coast Province. I was later elected
Regional Vice Chairman of our Central Organization of Trader Unions (COTU).

3. Mugabe Hangs On To Power
----------------------------------------
By brute force, Robert Mugabe’s regime has for the moment survived the longest and most successful
stay-away in Zimbabwe’s history. The ‘Final Push’, called by the Movement for Democratic
Change (MDC), did not topple Mugabe, but the brutal suppression revealed the isolation of a regime
with no support in the urban areas.

4. Congo Peace Deal On The Balance
-----------------------------------------------
As President Robert Mugabe continues to hang precariously on to power in Zimbabwe, a major
catastrophe is looming in Liberia where President Charles Taylor is on the brink of being overthrown
by a rag tag rebel army that has reached the outskirts of the capital city Monrovia. In the
Democratic Republic of Congo (DCR), a peace deal that was signed between rebel forces and the
government continues to be threatened by sporadic bouts of violence as rebel forces that were left
out of the deal try to capture territory.
