I would like to propose a news item for http://www.php.net/.
I am coordinating an effort to create a community site for PHP. This is
not similar to past efforts in the sense that this site is being created
by the community, not just for the community. I think more exposure can
help to ensure that this project adapts to the needs and desires of the
community as much as possible.
There is a small group of people who are managing this project. There are
four of us are members of the PHP development team and others who are
leaders in the community. Everyone involved with this project is only
interested in giving something back to the community.
O'Reilly has offered to sponsor us with a server and bandwidth, and I
realize that such commercial interest in this project might raise
questions (Well, Goba made me realize this). I have received offers of
help from other commercial entities as well, such as PHP Magazine.
However, I believe that such interest is at least mostly good-natured.
While I'm sure these groups would like to receive something in return (a
mention in the credits, advertising, etc.), in no way will their interests
guide the project. The managing committee will make all decisions, and we
will drop any sponsor who seems to be acting against the best wishes of
the community.
If this project seems like a good cause worthy of being mentioned in
php.net's news, I hope you will include the announcement included at the
bottom of this email.
Thanks for your consideration.
Chris
