I was looking for the Greek manual just to check out the progress that
has been done.
Indeed most of it is translated but it needs more time and apparently
more people.
I saw the link for the manual (only chm) version at the download docs
page.
There, I noticed that there are other languages that have just chm
manuals.
Those are: Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Greek, Hebrew,
Hungarian, Polish and Turkish.
If the XML files are not building at the time the HTML is built, some languages will not be generated. The Greek and Hebrew manuals probably have problems, so they are not generated as HTML files (the last CHM was built for those languages at least a month ago).
I suggest that there is a news item put on the frontpage pointing to the
homepages of each translation project.
The news item will call all people that want to help with the
translation of the php manual and didn't know of the translation project
or never though about joining it.
Those who read the documentation probably know about the translations, since both the manual index page and the download page has language selection. Most of our first time users get the preferred language of the manual according to the browser settings, so they will probably receive their own language version. Some of the users get distracted by the huge outdatedness of some translations... Most of those translations which are not building have no "translation homepage" at all.
After all, I don't think that such a news item would lead to any improvement. Local actions need to be taken. We are trying to get more people to the Hungarian translation group with several methods, but the general personality of Hungarian programmers does not fit into the free contribution scheme... There is one or two PHP related open source project developed in Hungary, and those are not international projects..
