Hello Mr B.Goodgroves
Hello, I write to you regarding my 'Bogus' bug report #25710. It seems that (without the help of your staff) I have now fixed the problems I was having. It was nothing to do with the temp directory settings for my sessions but more to the point 'register_globals'. II understand now that this is not and never was a bug and register globals have been turned off due to the new commands/security issues added/found.
It have been turned of since PHP 4.2.x, more then 6 months ago.
I am sorry for not being the so called php savy god your staff expect all your clients to be, and would just like to comment on the sheer lack of customer service I feel I received while (to my knowledge) reporting a bug. It would have been so nice if I would have simply been told to either rewrite my script(s) to take advantage of the new commands or enable register globals and live with the security risks.
Your bug report id is #25710, it's an auto incremented id. This means that our developpers (sniper most of the time) have been fighting, answering and resolving 25709 bugs before your one. Did you search the bugs database for the number of bogus bugs reported because of register_globals ? Do you know how many support question related to downloaded scripts not working we receive there ? Do you really thik that we know how each script written in PHP works ? I don't find nothing rude in sniper's answer. He simply told you to contact the author of the mentionned script. What's the deal ? How do you want him to know that it was a register_globals problem ? Do you want him to download the script, your current version of PHP and Apache and start debugging it ? I prefer seeing him wasting his time (he's a volunteer btw) on *real* bugs. We don't expect you to be a php god, we just want you to help yourself.
Could I ask that you please make a note within the documentation and/or on your website in plain laymans terms for the rest of your users that struggle with this issue, in the hope that it helps someone else where your technical support staff did not.
There's a big warning inside of your php.ini file, read it. The register_globals change have been announced, and documented in our manual. BTW, http://bugs.php.net/ is not a technical support place. Visit http://php.net/support to find out the right place to ask for support.
****************************************************************************************************************** Please find below the original bug report without my comments removed as they are from the website: http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=25710 ******************************************************************************************************************
If I was you, I would be happy to be censured.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ [2003-09-30 22:35:48] sniper@xxxxxxx User error -> bogus
Here, sniper was setting back the bug status to bogus. This will help us to make some statistics later. What's the deal ? Why do you need to add another comment ?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Huh, don't mention it... Nice comunity spirit you have here, I may have offended you by posting a 'bogus' bug report but you could have at least pointed me in the right direction as opposed to simply stating this was user error... I will continue to use php as I think the language is fantastic but the staff have a lot to learn (well the one that posted my reply does) about customer service. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Again, bugs reports are not a support place, and it's not our developpers task to help you. And why talking about the comunity ? Do you help this comunity as sniper does every day ? No. So please, think twice before posting this kind of comments. Regards, Mehdi Achour - A volunteer too.
