checkdate() broken

The function checkdate doesn't work properly in PHP 4.3.5-dev any more.
When I put variable to checkdate and that variable is empty
or for some other reasons, which I couldn't find out,
I get an error message.
In former PHP-versions checkdate worked very well.
Can you help me?
