It is quite possible that many people will want to download PHP5 as soon
as it is released as FINAL.
The amount of computing power and bandwidth needed to serve those
people, could prove to be bigger than the power that PHP.net and the
mirrors array currently has, especially if the announce and the files
are going online on the same time.
In the past, I've seen mirrors taking time to synchronize new releases.
While the surfer starts a download from www.php.net and is redirected to
other mirrors on the download itself, the mirrors might not have the
files yet.
My 1st suggestion is: First put the files in rsync->phpweb, and wait 24
hours (or at least 12...) for all the mirrors to update. Only then, put
an announce on the main page. This has two benefits:
A) When the release is indeed advertised, all the mirrors has it, less
people will be enforced to use the main site
B) Some eager-to-have-the-newest people will note the new files before
the release, and will download before the release, thus spreading the
load on the release itself (while writing these lines, I notice that
apache's apache-dist rsync module already has 2.0.50, but it's not on
the main site yet, just like I suggest)
My 2nd suggestion is: Put torrent trackers on PHP.net, and spread the
packages via the BitTorrent protocol. Since those file will have a
really high demand, people will get really good speeds on BitTorrent.
This could also help lowering the bandwidth resources everyone are going
to have upon release.
Thanks for listening,
Shimi
