Dear php.net webmasters, a few minutes ago, I tried to submit a bug report for a documentation bug in PHP. I was not successful, because the system requires cookie support in the user agent. Neither can I see the image, nor does the alternative text presented make any sense in its context. I had to read several times and to look at the source of the bug report page <URL:http://bugs.php.net/report.php> sent to my user agent and at the source of CAPTCHA-related scripts (<URL:http://bugs.php.net/source.php?url=/captcha-help.php> and <URL:http://bugs.php.net/source.php?url=/captcha-image.php>) to identify the problem and to find the right email addresses to write to. Without cookie support in the user agent, I get a zero-sized reply when the user agent requests the captcha. In this case and in the case of a text browser as user agent, the alternative text for the image is inserted, and the line on <URL:http://bugs.php.net/report.php> reads "Type If you are unable to read this image, click the help link to the right of the input box into this box...". This is very difficult to parse for a human, IMHO. Please make sure that reporting bugs is possible a) without image support in the user agent, and especially b) without cookie support in the user agent. If that should not be easily possible, I recommend putting the email address of an appropriate PHP mailing list (or email account that forwards mails to the bug tracking system) on the bug report page, so that users can still report bugs. If you are concerned about spam, that mailing list/pseudo email address would have to be moderated, though. For the meantime, please tell me how to report the bug I discovered. If that's not easily possible, I can send you the bug report via email. It would be nice of you to provide feedback on this issue. Many thanks, and happy PHP hacking, -- Nico
