To whom it may concern, I am writing to you regarding the front page of php.net, wherein you state "PHP is a widely-used general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for Web development and can be embedded into HTML." This is factually incorrect and it's confusing. PHP can not be embedded into HTML. Once you throw in the <?php and tell your apache to parse the file with php, the file ceases to be a html document and becomes a php script, class file or whatever. It should read "PHP is a widely-used general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for Web development and HTML can be embedded directly into it." I've just come from two arguments, one after the other, in which I have had to correct people on this. In each case, they referenced your site and in each case, after having tried reasonable measures, it was only when I asked them to provide the W3C specification for the PHP node in any of the HTML definitions that they conceded and started listening to me. Think you could change this? Yours sincerely,

You are actually wrong. <?php ?> is a valid SGML and XML PI tag and as such is a perfectly valid XHTML tag. Whether or not it is a valid HTML tag can be debated, but with HTML being a subset of SGML it isn't that much of a stretch. Given that it is a valid XHTML tag, you are being rather pedantic here and this will not be changed. -Rasmus
