PHP 5.2.1 sessions problem

Hey hope you can help me!
I used to have php 4.4.4 running on my machine. Updated to php 5.2.1 last
week from the file php-5.2.1-win32-installer.msi.
In the installation folder there is no 'ext' folder with extesions.
On php 4 there was an 'extension' folder. If I change at php.ini the path
'path/to/php5/ext' to 'path/to/php4/extensions/' will it work?
I got problem with session handling. Session_start() seems not to start. No
session variable is stored.
Any suggestions?
Php 5.2.1
Apache 2.2.4
MySQL 5
On WinXP Pro En sp2.
