Please,help me!

I'm a novice programmer in php, I did an application in php with Postgres suport database on one server configurated at high-school by admin. I need use this application at mai job and I can-t configure the php with pgsql, although I compilated php "--with-pgsql" parameter, the test.php4 it runs, but one applic.php4 with pgsql functions didn't runs, i get the message: "call undefined function pg_connect..." I used the php-4.0.6.tar.gz download, I followed the readme file. Please, can you help me?
