It is recommended that the pre-SELECT COUNT(*) method not be used, and it shouldn't be
considered a viable solution.
Given the time between executing the COUNT(*) statement, and the actual SELECT statement, you are
very likely to get different results.
This should not be considered a workaround in what is a design flaw in PDO and I'm surprised to
see the PHP documentation team make such a recommendation.
