If you're using sharedance to distributed php sessions across a group of machines beware of the following: On a freebsd 6.x system I have observed a huge performance hit caused by dns/host file lookups. To ensure maximum performance using sharedance you should set the 'SESSION_HANDLER_HOST' constant to an IP rather than a hostname.
