What you describe is the expected bahaviour. Actually rtrim does not know whether you are using
single or double quotes.
' \t' is a string with space as the 1st character, backslash as the 2nd and t as the 3rd.
\t is not an escape sequence in single quoted strings. But it is in double quoted strings.
