I'm afraid it is an alias, at least in 5.1.1 :
$haystack = "test.this.txt";
echo strstr($haystack, ".a") . "\n";
echo strchr($haystack, ".a") . "\n";
outputs empty lines.
Still, I'd wish it were like Tarin suggested.
