OK, so I've been through this I don't know how many times and it always takes me a day to
figure it out.
If you create a shell script for your configure like I do, make sure that there are no spaces after
your '\' character. Having a space after the '\' (at the end of the line)
breaks things somehow and (for me at least), it prevents the creation of libphp4.so
example good:
exec ./configure --with-apxs=/usr/local/apache/bin/apxs \
--with-mysql=/usr \
--with-openssl \
--with-zlib \
--with-curl=/usr \
--enable-exif \
--with-gd
example bad (space after '--with-curl=/usr \'):
exec ./configure --with-apxs=/usr/local/apache/bin/apxs \
--with-mysql=/usr \
--with-openssl \
--with-zlib \
--with-curl=/usr \
--enable-exif \
--with-gd
