Beware of using this function on an empty string. It caught me off-guard because in PHP 4.4.0 it
returns TRUE on an empty string, while in PHP 4.4.2 it returns FALSE.
Since the documentation is not entirely clear on what should happen with an empty string, it's
best to check for that case separately yourself.
