For the first note:
$pat = "^[a-zA-Z]{1}[[a-zA-Z0-9]";
you missed a * at the end!
this is a correct regex por arbitrary large strings:
$pat = "^[a-zA-Z]{1}[[a-zA-Z0-9]*";
