For those who are trying to determine whether they should be using an SMTP server *or* the local
sendmail (or equivelent), keep the following in mind.
Using an SMTP server assumes 100% connectivity. That is to say, if network connectivity goes down
even for a few seconds, then the email that was to be sent during this time will fail and never
retry.
Using a local sendmail instantiation is a fair bit less error prone. If the webserver that is
executing the mail() call looses connectivity, the email will be queued up on disk and it will most
likely still be sent out. Sendmail will attempt to send the message for (usually) up to 5 days.
The mail() function defaults to using the local sendmail.
