I just tested your example:
list($first, $second, $third) = explode('.','test.php#.jpg');
echo "First = $first<br>";
echo "Second = $second<br>";
echo "Third = $third<br>";
and it displays:
First = test
Second = php#
Third = jpg
Which looks correct to me. I'm on PHP 4.3.11. What version are you running?
