Yeh this worked for me too
mysql_query("SET CHARACTER SET 'latin2'", $conn);
only i needed to chage it to
mysql_query("SET CHARACTER SET 'utf8'", $conn);
i had problem when i select data from mysql its returned latin1 insted utf8.
