note 68138 added to ref.mssql

Ok, So I installed freeTDS, configured ODBC to use TDS ODBC library. When I try to connect to server using isql, there is no problem at all. I can even run all the queries and get the results through shell. However, when I try to use mssql_connect function and run a query through a PHP script, I don't get any output. The freeTDS reference http://www.freetds.org/userguide/php.htm says I should recompile PHP. Which can potentially become a problem because it is running on a live server. Any suggestions to proceed without harming existing installation of PHP?
