In recent version (say 4.0.1+) pg_connect is very broken if you call it more than once in a script.
This is a documented bug but one that hasn't been fixed for some time (why, I couldn't
tell you).. bugs.php.net has this listed but I had to banh my head against a wall for a few before I
discovered it wasn't PostgreSQL or my PHP code. After you call pg_connect a few times you will
lose the connection and a warning about the link identifier not being valid will be displayed.
It's happened to me with PHP 4.0.1 - 4.0.4pl1
