I agree with Thomas about the note of "endeveit at pisem dot net". Decreasing the size of
a hash simply make is less secure, no matter what the system of reducing is. The ultimate measure is
the total possible results. An integer with 8 bytes has less number of possibilities than a normal
hash value.
